The department is a training center for pediatric surgery towards the degree of M.Ch.(Pediatric Surgery) which is recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI). Surgical training is conducted in the fields of pediatric gastro-intestinal surgery, urology, thoracic surgery, plastic surgery, endocrine surgery, neonatal surgery, neurosurgery, minimal access surgery, oncology, therapeutic and diagnostic endoscopic procedures of the oesophagus, tracheo-bronchial tree and genito-urinary tract. A 3-year MCh course is run in the department. During this course the candidate has to work on and submit dissertation towards partial fulfillment for the degree of M.Ch. The course offered is affiliated to Pt Deendayal Upadyay memorial health sciences & university, Naya Raipur. For the 3-year course a candidate has to have a MS in General Surgery (MCI recognized) and the enrollment is vacancy based through a competitive examination (NEET). Selected candidates for the 3-year course are treated as academic senior residents during their tenure and they are eligible to take the M.Ch. examination at the end of three years. Further, the department also trains junior residents on rotation from M.S. general surgery. Observers and trainees from other pediatric surgical departments from India and abroad may also visit the department for varying periods after obtaining the due permission from the academic section, of the DKSPGI. The faculty of the department takes regular instructional lectures for M.B.B.S. students and participates in guest lectures, CME’s and symposia conducted by other scientific organizations and institutions in India and abroad. From time to time the department organizes guest lectures, symposia, seminars and live operative workshops, as a part of ongoing CME programmes.

-: Indoor Services :-

        The department has admitting facilities for 49 Patients in the pediatric surgery ward which consists of 30 beds in male ward (B5) and 19 beds in female surgical ward(B4). The department also runs a pediatric surgical ICU with 18 and a neonatal surgical ICU with 10 beds. Eight of the 49 bed in the ward are high dependency beds with full facilities for monitoring and ventilation. All the beds in the pediatric surgical ICU are equipped with individual Monitors and individual ventilators. All the beds in the neonatal surgical ICU are equipped with individual neonatal warmers, ample number of infusion pumps and neonatal ventilators. One senior resident and 4 junior residents are available round the clock in the department. The facilities for routine pre-operative and post-operative care of surgical patients, ventilatory care, parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy are provided by the resident staff.

-: Operating Services :-

        The department has two fully equipped modular operation theaters round the clock with the facility of dedicated pediatric anesthetist. The department conducts more than 10 major pediatric surgeries daily as either routine or emergency cases. The facility for pediatric minimally invasive surgeries and pediatric endoscopies are available in the department. The number of routine cases done daily averages 4-6 and includes laparoscopic surgeries in neonate and pediatric age group. The facility for pediatric urology and pediatric endourology is available with the department.
